Positive Result of Salary History Bans
According to a study by the Boston University Law School, the trend of states’ passing bans on salary history requirements in applications is having the effect of shrinking pay gaps that are based on race and/or gender. According to the study, done in 2024, women hired in areas with bans received 7.9% more than those hired in jurisdictions without them. A similar 7. 8% differential existed for salary increases between the two categories. Similarly, for minorities changing jobs, those in areas with no ban received an average 3.9% increase, while those in areas with a ban received an average 7.9% increase.
