Report Shows that Onboarding Needs To Improve
Industries are facing talent shortages, so employee retention is much more important. One important change that employers need to make, according to “Talogy,” a provider of talent management, is to improve their orientation/onboarding experience for new hires. Often, that involves a review of policies and maybe the handbook. According to Talogy, orientation should go beyond that and be more about “grounding new employees in the organization,” making the orientation more of a welcoming experience than just an indoctrination. In a survey of 800 industrial sector experts, Talogy found that close to one-third of respondents said onboarding was “the single, most critical factor” for a new hire’s success. It was pointed out that “nearly a third” of a new hire’s success is determined within their first few weeks on the job. Thus, a strong onboarding process is not just “nice,” it is essential to employee retention, leading to productivity, leading to a positive impact on the bottom line. Positions that tend to be high turnover can be positively affected by a strong orientation program. The converse is also true. Finally, if a mentor is available for a new hire, that can be an important factor in their success as an ongoing employee.
