Politics in the Workplace

With emotions running high on both sides of the “political aisle,” staying away from political discussions at work is the “politic” thing to do. As a matter of fact, approximately 70 percent of employees do not want to discuss politics at work, according to a Monster survey. 1 in 7 would rather have a cavity drilled than discuss politics, the report stated. But it happens anyway. About 6 in 10 believe politics should not be brought up in the workplace, and that same number believe that talking about politics could harm their careers.

Suggestions for employers include the following from Monster:

  • Establish clear communication policies that promote professionalism and respect.

  • Provide manager training to identify political bias or discrimination.

  • Focus on inclusion, collaboration and shared organizational goals, not ideological alignment.

  • Develop a workplace culture that values civility and focuses on common objectives.
