Who Constitute the “Sandwich Generation” and What Do They Need?

The “sandwich generation” is defined as those who are caring for both the generation before them (parents) and the generation after them (children). The increased longevity of the older US population is leading to more people fitting this description than ever before. The prediction is that five years down the road, half the workforce will be in this position. Currently, it includes about 25% of adults. Half of 1000 mothers in this age group surveyed said they had had to change jobs because of caregiving responsibilities, for example.

How are employers to assist this key demographic? Caregiving leave is identified by them as a key benefit, but it is offered by only about 50% of employers. A long-term view of the need for this benefit is necessary because care for aging parents can last a long time – and cost a lot of money. Employers who take this into account will have better success obtaining and retaining employees.
